We often say that archaeologists “dig”—but another word for this is excavate. When we excavate, we don’t just make big holes. We use special tools (like a trowel!) to work slowly and carefully to remove the dirt in flat layers. Once we take something out of the ground, we can never put it back exactly the way it was—so we write down everything we encounter on the way!
